Was Starlight Express the first full-on mecha musical? The characters are all supposed to be anthropomorphic trains who sing while rollerskating, right? And they’re all endlessly zooming about a post-apocalyptic Rollerball-esque deathsport arena for the edification of bloodthirsty out-of-towner suburban audiences, right? That sounds pretty mecha to me. Sure, it’s not anime, it wasn’t created in Japan, but maybe it independently captures some of that mecha spirit? And did FASA Corporation ever do an official Starlight Express module for BattleTech? Did Palladium Books ever publish a Starlight Express module for their Robotech RPG? Isn’t it about time the characters from Starlight Express got featured in a Super Robot Wars game?
